CAPTAIN AMERICA 2 WINTER SOLDIER by Michael Johnston

CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER

by Silverscreen Snob, Michael Johnston & Kudos

Silverscreen Snob
The latest installment of the Marvel franchise has landed in the muscly form of Captain America. However the main attraction is neither the size of Chris Evans arms (sorry ladies) nor the pout of the beautiful Scarlett Johansson (never mind boys). Instead, the whole film is nothing short of a game changer for those that follow the Marvel universe and the TV series. Without giving too much away, watching the old films will never be the same again.
Mr Evans does a fantastic job as the man out of time trying to make sense of the world he now inhabits. Joining him this time is Ms Johansson as the arse-kicking Black Widow, and Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, aka, Falcon. Both are great in their sidekick roles; Black Widow gives the girls a reason to cheer by holding her own against the men of the movie, however these moments seem to be inter-cut with several lingering shots of her tightly clad bum. Mackie also plays his part well without looking like he is just auditioning for his own solo film.

The film is action sequence after action sequence but this doesn't detract from the plot. The only negative I have with the faster paced scenes is that sometimes the punches and kicks are a blur (but that could be something to do with my age).

And now onto the titular Winter Soldier. I won't reveal his identity, even if it is pretty much an open secret now. However I will say that, although he is an excellent foil for Steve Roger's Captain, I would have liked to see him a lot more. For a man whose name is in the title, he plays second fiddle to some of the other bad guys.

Despite my Winter Soldier gripe, this is a fantastic film and really does open up the future for the Marvel film franchise. There are little nods to other Marvel characters, both old and new, which should keep every fan boy (and girl) happy. As usual please stay until the end of the credits for two post film sequences, the first of which had me squeal with delight... thank goodness there was only my boyfriend and daughter in the cinema (who were just as excited).

Now I am not a Avengers fan, Thor was a bore, Iron Man got rusty by the third and the Hulk never amounted to much..........Captain America I did like, the tone, the plot and the morals....
So on to Winter Soldier, stunning on the eyes without getting silly, some of the smaller set pieces stayed longer in the head than the huge brilliant CGI orgy later on, the side on fight scene at the start was like ballet with bite, the lift scene has got me paranoid about sweaty people in lifts and the Black Widow, well just got me sweaty, wow.

Your eyes will not be disappointed but weaved in is also something for the grey matter, has a feel of 70s cold war movie where you can trust no one, mixed with current paranoia of remove the threat at any cost even before any threat has been made...........”thought crime” punished by remote drones.
A strong cast backed by writing that never lets you worry about the plot and CGI that is jaw dropping, sit down, pull down the safety harness and enjoy the ride but remember not to leave your brain in the foyer ….....you will need it and a little treat for “War Games” fans
“This is not freedom, this is fear"

Michael johnston
Captain America 2 winter soldier...I like my superheroes clean cut nobel righteous etc and with the possible exception of superman they don't come cleaner cut than steve rogers .from the start a wonderful set piece rescuing some people from pirates to the elevator scene .nick fury stuck in traffic...(seriously) and the taking down of a fighter jet will have the nerds reaching for the tissues, not that its all set pieces (theres lots but it never feels like they re just cramm...ing em in)the weight of the film is in the trust issues and secret organisations that weigh on cap s mind when fury tells him all isn't as it seems ,Robert redford reminds the young uns how to act (isn't he always good)and jenny agutter will have your jaw on the floor in one scene ,the villain on show is silent but deadly and doesn't appear till mid way and isn't your usual manic psycho, the fight scenes with the cap and him are outstanding ,its hard to keep things fresh when every film has a fight scene trying to out do the last one..but this does ,admittedly I love a marvel superhero film but I dare anyone not to enjoy the ride...as usual with marvel stay till the end credits for a sneek peek (the uber nerds will understand it all ) but will leave most scratching your head. in short, better than the 1st not as good as avengers but really what is!!!

HUE AND CRY by Nigel Hare

HUE AND CRY by Nigel Hare

Hue and Cry: I first watched this movie some weeks ago and it has taken this long to digest enough to give it a fair review.
It is listed as the first of the Ealing Comedies but it isn't funny, their later comedies have a lot more humour. If you think of Enid Blighton books like the Famous five or boys own adventure books or even, if you are my age, the Saturday morning children's shows down at your local cinema you will get a better idea of the themes and tone of ...this movie. It's plot even begins from a detective story in a weekly comic.
A gang of working class kids in post war London are the heroes and this is the beginning of my dislike for this movie. It's not the location shots of bombed to rubble London that I object, that's is historic and worth a view, but the children. Where are the rough accents and why are all the older ones always wearing shirt, tie and jacket! Am I being fair?
The bad guy is played by Jack Warner (I don't think that is a spoiler because it is obvious) whom you may remember as Dixon of Dock Green, and if you've never heard of that prime time Saturday BBC show ask a parent or someone my age although I'm barely old enough. The delight of this movie is Alistair Sim but his screen time is ten minutes max and he could have saved this movie had he been given more.
I still don't think my critique of this movie is fair because I am convinced that the market is children. But if I doubt that any children would thank you if you showed them this movie in fact you would have to tie them to the chair and tape their eyes open to make them watch. Child line!!!! For those in the club: it is available on DVD as part of my Ealing collection but try the others not this.

GELNGARRY GLEN ROSS by Nigel Hare

GELNGARRY GLEN ROSS
by Nigel Hare

Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, Jonathan Pryce and Kevin Spacey with a cast list of well respected actors you wonder how much left of the budget they had to go on the other important things like the script and, therefore, how good the movie is going to be. I wonder if the financiers and the accountants decided enough fans will watch their favourite actors in a poor movie for it to make a profit. The script was written by D...avid Mamet (never heard of him - neither have I but he has won a Pulitzer prize for drama) adapted from his Tony nominated play of the same name.
This movie depicts a side of the American dream that you don't often find in movies. It's the drama of the salesmen who are very much selling something slightly intangible and some would say a con. They sell land as an investment. Maybe these salesmen go home to the picket fence surrounding their home in the burbs with the pretty wife waiting to relax their man or maybe they don't.
It's starts with the rain poring down and it pours on these salesmen in a meeting with Alec Baldwin whose attempt to motivate them bounces from 'look how rich I am' to 'your all bums and I will fire you if you do not close the deal' complete with corporate accessories such as brass balls. The thrills come from the interactions between Pacino (top salesman on a good run) and down on his luck Jack Lemmon. Incidentally the latters character Shelley 'the machine' Levene is the bases for the 'Gill' character in the Simpsons. They are two actors in tip top form and shine like the stars they are (RIP Jack). But then not of these actors give anything but top class performances and it is that plus the script that puts this film right up there as a classic. It is a movie I think I shall watch once a year and never get bored with it. Classic, classic, classic.

JOHN Q by Ben Nicholls

JOHN Q
 by Ben Nicholls

John Q - Started off just like one of your average Denzel films, but to be fair, I'm a huge fan so this wasn't a problem.

He plays an out of luck father who's son suddenly develops a terminal condition and he only has months to watch him die.

Himself and his family and the community go through hell and back to try and save his life. This fighting takes a turn for the worse, or better depending on your view on the situation. He takes matters into his own hands and accidentally gets the whole city behind him. If you haven't seen it, I can't tell you the whole picture or it'll spoil it.

To recap, it's one of the best movies I've seen and even had me stopping the tears at one point. A true hero of a father story.

12 YEARS A SLAVE by Michael Hayward

12 YEARS A SLAVE
by Michael Hayward

So, obviously it's been hugely successful and highly lauded with Oscar nominations aplenty, so I expected good things. For the most part it delivered. A moving tale which has been well acted at all levels and with some intricate little character background and sidestories. Some of the time it bordered on being a little bit predictable, it almost makes a caricature of some of the main protagonists and it's not groundbreaking or new. We've seen this stuff before. It's a good film but not worthy of it's lofty esteem imho. A decent cast (Fassbender as with most McQueen stuff) but it didn't grab me as much as I'd hoped so I'd score it a solid 7.5/10.

THE IRON LADY by Melissa Hilton

THE IRON LADY
by Melissa Hilton

The Iron Lady, what can I say about this film.....it's an amazingly well acted piece of political history, a who's who of acting royalty from Meryl Streep to Richard E Grant to the treasure of Jim Broadbent.
It's a moving film that takes you from feeling sorry for Mrs T losing her mind, to wanting to shout at her for not putting her children or husband first.
I've wanted to watch this film for a long time and I wasn't disappointed, it has something fo...r everyone one love, war and boobs.....blink and you'll miss them.
I can honestly say it brought tears to my eyes and made me see the lady I remember on the tv when I was little in a completely different light, if you're expecting a hard hitting political drama you'll be disappointed but if you're looking for a film about a woman to look up to and respect then this it is.
One to watch again

THE SUM OF ALL FEARS
by Melissa Hilton

Well what can I say about 'The Sum of All Fears'.....to be honest not a lot, I unfortunately fell asleep till a big explosion woke me up, it's not a film for girls.....unless you count Ben Affleck running around hot and sweaty. If you like nuclear weapons, explosions, dodgy Russian accents and Morgan Freeman it's the film for you, sorry it's not a great review I will try not to sleep through the next one

THE ROAD by Kudos

THE ROAD

........to nowhere

by Kudos

I braced myself for this film, set after a global doomsday event it follows the trek of a father and son to find................well it wasn,'t any emotion, never troubled my tear ducts, never lift my heart rate above sleep level, never once did I care about the father who every step of the way made the wrong choice, oh and there was a lot of steps, and sleeping and more steps, it would be more tense watching a marathon in reverse in slow motion.
It is a tribute to all involved that they managed to make the end of the world less interesting than the spider that was walking across my carpet whilst  I was watching, the spider achieved more and did it in less time.
Stuck with it right to the end............and to be fair I loved the ending, never have I been so happy to see the end credits, eject the dvd and throw it out onto the street in the hope every car going passed ground it into the tarmac

If I wanted to watched some scruffy IQ challenged moron pushing a trolley for 2 hours then I certainly don't need to pay for the pleasure, we have 24 supermarkets now and sure I would be more entertained hanging around the local Tescos at 3am in the morning

I wish I had followed Charlize Therons  example, walked out early even if it meant certain death, at least it would have been quick and spared me this trek............the guy even made his own death dull.

Devoid of any plot, devoid of any back story, devoid on any emotion.......just avoid.

DISTURBIA by Kudos & Nigel Hare

DISTURBIA
by Kudos & Nigel Hare

Nigel Hare
A slow burning homage to Hitchcock. The last thirty minutes of this film are as tense and thrilling as Hitchcock but not at his best. As a movie it kept me watching but it lacked a little depth. David Morse, the serial killer lacked the menace I have come to expect of serial killers and struck me as a pale version of Hannibal Lector which was either his or the director's mistake. The moment the central character was house bound and picked up the binoculars you could predict where the movie was heading and that's where it went without diversion. Worth a watch but you could skip the middle to save time if you desire.

Kudos
The plot is a man trapped in his house and starts taking notice of his neighbours and one seems to be acting very suspiciously.

So this is a modern interruption of Hitchcocks “Rear window”, aimed at lower age and some would say lower IQ audience but I disagree, it would be pointless remaking the same movie set 50+ years on, the original is teflon and nothing new would stick, as the 1998 Christopher Reeve version proved.

Take the DNA of the original chuck in some young sexy things, inject some humour and more gore, turn the pace dial up a couple of notches and you end up with a perfectly decent “takeaway and beer” movie, The cast work well together, it even tries to put some meat on the bones of the female co star, she is no dippy bimbo but there quite a few scenes of her with her meat and bones on show

Yes it lacks the slow ramping up of tension the original did so well and a “tag” is never going to work as well to restrict the options of the observer compared to being in a wheel chair but it never let go of my attention and entertained me whilst enjoying a few beers..............sometimes that is all a film needs to do.

It is so far removed from the source code it should not offend the fans of Hitchcock and may even drag in a few to watch the original...which is what I will be doing next week

THE PURGE by Lee Frost

THE PURGE

by Lee Frost

Just watched "The Purge", really good premise...For 12 hours once a year everything is legal, purge your cravings, hatred and desires. This is based in 2020 in the USA where crime and unemployment are so out of control they make every crime legal for one night. It's an extremely tense film where the main excitement comes from, you could actually see the Americans passing this law. It has enough suspense and twists to keep you guessing. This isn't far fetched, coming from a country where you can buy a 50 calibre weapon at a convention. Overall I would recommend for a quick tense thriller.

THE DEVILS DOUBLE by Michael Haywood Kudos & Nigel Hare

THE DEVILS DOUBLE
by Kudos, Nigel Hare & Michael Haywood

MICHAEL HAYWOOD
So I finally got around to watching the oft debated and much recommended film "The Devil's Double."
I knew the story of Uday Saddam Hussein before watching the film and had seen a documentary or two about his sadistic psychotic nature. I'd also seen interviews and things with Latif Yahia so kinda knew what this film would entail. What I didn't expect was what a great job Dominic Cooper would do in both roles. He seemed to have a way of flicking from one character to the other and yet keeping each identifiable and separate. Yes they look alike but you can just tell which is which. The film isn't for the feint hearted. It's brutal at times, deals with dark subject matter in an unflinching way and the protagonist is a heartless, sadistic, sick and twisted individual who exemplifies all that is wrong with corruption and power of dictators and despots. It's a tale made more horrifying because it's based on truth. The film is a strong 7/10 with decent performances, if you get chance to watch it then you should, but know what's coming!

KUDOS
Based on a true story about Saddam Hussein’s son, Uday and the man forced to be his body double Latif , both parts played by one actor, Dominic Cooper. He portrays Uday as tyrant, devoid of any empathy or humanity, a narcissists who takes what ever he desires, women, girls even lives without an ounce of regret or remorse, in fact the more extreme the damage he does the more joy he gets out of it. This could be too dark to watch but Dominic wraps it all up in a clown like performance that reminded me of Heath ledgers Joker, some lines will make you laugh and feel guilty about it, a joy to watch even though you wont enjoy what he does.

Latif is a less complex character, a man blackmailed and beaten into sharing years of his life with this power corrupted psychopath.

The film has some shocking scenes, some you see with your eyes others are left for you own head to play with, the language is vicious at times and it is not for the prudish but none of it is unnecessary.

It is an intoxicating tale that will take you too some very dark places but Dominic Coopers Uday is highly addictive to watch, he should have got best lead and best support for these roles, the fact he was completely ignored by the Oscars say more about them than it does about this masterpiece in acting.

Looking at imbd reviews, not seen any other film get so many 10/10s and now has another one

NIGEL HARE
This is the third time I have started this review. It was a hard movie to watch and that is making it a hard movie to review. It lacks beauty. Beauty in landscape, opulent lifestyle and even the good guys is hard to find. The main subject of the movie is the sex addicted, drug addled, son of a dictator with no regard for anyone but his own instant pleasure. There in lays the problem with the movie no one could like the young hussain even his own ...father who at one point wants to chop off his genitals. In all honesty you wished Saddam would as I'm sure many were punished in such a way under his regime. It show how good the star acted in the roles of the both the sadist son and his double with no attempt to humanise the beast. It is just this performance that keeps you watching what is a very depressing and nasty little film. It lacks any subtlety or nuance that was found in Caligula. This movie is watchable but will leave you with a bad taste.

NYMPHOMANIC VOL I/VOL II by Michael Hayward

NYMPHOMANIC VOL I/VOL II by Michael Hayward

Nymphomaniac Vol I/Vol II
OK, I'll admit that I enjoy dark subject matter and many of the most disturbing films I've seen are foreign language but films from Denmark aren't usually among them. This film centres on Joe, a self-proclaimed nymphomaniac who is found laid in an alley barely conscious and nursed back to health by a kind man who listens to her tales of woe. Now, the film is graphic, it's a Lars Von Trier movie after all and with scenes that are intended to shock in ...much the same vein as Baise Moi or Irreversible for example, but this is a more mainstream movie with some big Hollywood names among the castlist to boot. I guess that made the fact that I could find no real depth to any of the characters nor feel anything towards their plight even more of a shame. The lead character is a nymphomaniac, only she doesn't seem to enjoy sex, there's not a shred of feeling behind any of the graphic scenes and little point to them either as they don't help the plot and the scenes themselves feels very clinical. The plot is weak, there's little point to it all and I was left wondering why I'd bothered. Not for me, I'd score it 2/10. 1 for each half. Actually the one stand-out performance for me was Uma Thurman as a cheated wife. She does 'on the verge of implosion' with aplomb. Shame that was the highlight and over briefly.

NEED FOR SPEED by Kudos
its racing BITCH”

Real cars, real racing, real expensive metal being crunched not pixels being crunched by expensive pcs and that makes a huge difference to the viewer, the jeopardy is ramped up, the appreciation of the drivers involved is increased and every scrap, crash, jump just hits much harder than any CGI could......the stunt coordination and choreography is truly stunning …...the last 20 mins are pure car snuff porn, I swear I nearly shed a tear at the damage but enjoyed every second, fans of retro American muscle, modern American muscle and the finest that Europe can build will be in car paradise or hell.

When the cars aren’t on screen Aaron Paul seems slightly happier now he has traded in the Toyota Tercel for some slightly more exotic machines, yes there is a lot of Jessie in there still but it adds the “grit” needed for the role, Michael Keaton injects some madness with his “Murray Walker on acid” narration and the rest of the cast all add something to the joyride, you will not see a better way to quit a job!

Some will get anal on the details of the cars..............screw that, its sexy cars doing sexy stuff filmed in very sexy way held together by a very serviceable plot............oh and a very well done homage to “BULLETT”

Only just finished watching it and already waiting for the DVD, need to see some of the set pieces again and how they did it has got to be included in the extras also want to see that bloody dog as road kill!

THE MAN IN THE WHITE SUIT by Nigel Hare

THE MAN IN THE WHITE SUIT by Nigel Hare

The Man in the White Suit: Another Ealing studio production staring Alec (use the force Luke) Guinness. He plays a textile scientist looking to create something. He does explain it to Joan Greenwood (playing the textile owners daughter) but I have no more idea of what he said than she did. It doesn't give the plot away by saying it's a white cloth that doesn't get dirty and doesn't wear out. And after a few comic explosions he manages it.
This is when the fi...lm shares some of the themes of I'm alright Jack ( It even has a female anti capitalist shop steward that is a little softer than Peter Sellers) with the vested interests looking to see that the invention is suppressed. Kidnapping and a final chase through the streets of a Northern Industrial town bring the film to an end. (Watch out for the string on a flat cap so it flies off at the right moment)
A good comedic film lightly poking fun at 1950s Britain made with the usual Ealing craft: tight scripts, excellent acting and all jolly good fun, what!

God I enjoyed this ….......thanks

As an atheist this should have me kicking this into the bullshit bin BUT having an above average knowledge of the Christian faith it grabbed me, it toys with all the points theists and atheists dual with.

This is Dogma for adults, it plays with same themes of dogma but remembers that for every angel there is the an anti angel, if you have no knowledge of the Christian faith I struggle to see what you would get from this.

What it does very well is have confidence in the viewer, not everything is explained in a linear way, you get dumped “in the middle” and it relies on you finding your feet whilst moving at a pace, not a problem for me, right from the start I had confidence in the guy with the pen and holding the camera

Fx and cinematography : if matrix showed what can be done this shows how it can be used, even viewed with eyes 10 years on from its release it stuns and drips God like skill in every scene

Struggling to fault this, all the cast are bringing their A game, the plot is concise and it entertains your eyes from the first frame to the last whilst making your mind spin faster than what the eye sees

If you have no interest in religion this may be hell for you, if you do (for or against) then this should be 2 hours of heaven

BRAM STOKERS DRACULA by Nigel Hare

BRAM STOKERS DRACULA by Nigel Hare

A classic tale given the modern treatment 22 years ago: perhaps it requires a remake for the next generation or has the vampire moved on into twilight?
This is a very stylised movie while still checking the Draculas of the past. I suspect it adheres to the original text quite closely though I have to say it's not a novel I have read. It is visually very pleasing and moves at a good pace.
Stunning performances from Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins as Dracul...a and van Helsink more than make up for the awful Keanu Reeves (so wooden he's Pinocchio) and Winona Ryder.
It is an Oscar winner but not one of the big ones. Well worth a watch if you enjoy the vampire genre or if you missed it all those years ago.

COUNTESS DRACULA by Nigel hare

Although released in 1971 'Countess Dracula' could have been made as a warning to our society and it's obsession with youth and beauty. Based on the life of Elizabeth Báthory a Hungarian Countess of the late 1500s. How based it is would be for historians to argue not this reviewer.
The opening scene of this Hammer horror shows how much of a bitch the countess causing the death of a peasant this is followed up by arranging the kidnapping of her own daughter and the brut...al murder of many women.
Being a Hammer horror of the early seventies it has a large dose of tantalizing cleavage and flashes of boob. To a prepubescent this aspect of Hammer was very appealing and made them a must watch.
Little did I realize in my thrill at Ingrid Pitt's curves that forty years later I would re watch and see it as an allegory of the modern world. Bathing in a virgins blood to regain youthful looks might appeal to the rich and famous of today. Except for the fact it does need to be a sacrifice, I would be expect to be seeing adverts on the net for the young to give blood. Unless that is why there was a spate of third world child adoption a few years back! I shudder at the thought

CONTACT by kudos

CONTACT by Kudos

This is a very hard film to review, I approached it blind ( it had slipped under my radar which is ironic) and the less you know, the better it works, so will stick to a few main ingredients but try not to give away to much of the end product.

  1. it is a mature imagining of our 1st contact with “others”, no huge flying ships blowing up the White House or tripods with death rays, its feet are firmly in current science for most of it, the fiction element is used with restrain.
  2. Jodie foster puts in a out of this world performance, it is rare to have a female lead which concentrates on what is in her head not what is below it, there is no reason the lead had to be female so it was a brave choice and even braver not to go down the normal route of the lens lingering on boobs and bums......the only real passion you see from her is the passion for science.
  3. Now this is the bit that could ALIENate some viewers, the core of the film deals with the conflict of science versus faith, both sides are dealt an even hand, both sides get to place down their cards and as the deck gets smaller you wonder who gets to place the trump card

It is not for everyone but if you enjoy stuff like Doctor Who then it is defiantly worth a go, for me it ticked all the boxes I want from science fiction and left me wishing Carl Sagan was still with us and writing.................maybe the odd Doctor Who episode
